Audi’s latest concept car takes advantage of electric turbocharging to create serious power in a small package.

By using an electric turbocharging system, the Audi TT Clubsport Turbo Technology Concept boasts 600 HP and 479 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough to carry it from 0-60 MPH in 3.6 seconds to a top speed of 192.6 MPH and all from a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine.

“In our TDIengines, we are close to production readiness with this technology. We are now presenting it in a TFSI – here too, we are the first automaker in the world to do this. Audi technical development boss Ulrich Hackenberg said today at the Wörthersee Tour in Reifnitz, Austria.

By using a dedicated 48-volt electrical sub-system that relies on a lithium ion battery stored in the trunk, Audi’s system doesn’t need to rely on exhaust pressure to spool its turbochargers. Instead, the electrical augmentation creates 147.5 lb-ft of torque on its own when the engine is operating a low speed. In other words, turbo lag is a thing of the past with this technology. It also means that Audi can design the turbocharger specifically to deal with high pressure and at the same time, high engine power.

The TT Clubsport Turbo Technology Concept is more than a high-tech powertrain dropped into a TT; Audi also gave it a coilover suspension, an overall stance 5.5 inches wider than the normal car and a manually adjustable rear wing made of carbon-fiber reinforced polymer. It has an unladen weight of 3,077 lbs, not to mention how it looks.
